The Hong Kong Palace Museum (HKPM) is a dedicated museum that showcases the exquisite artefacts from Palace Museum’s collections and collaborates with other museums in research, exhibitions, education and public programmes.  The museum comprises 7 600 square metres of gallery space for standing and special exhibitions on Palace Museum’s collections of paintings, calligraphy, antiquities and historical objects, as well as thematic displays on world cultures and civilisations.  With the construction work in full swing for completion in 2022, the HKPM is seeking Curators of different disciplines who will assume a supervisory role in overseeing the management and organisation of exhibitions at the future exhibition galleries. 

 

We are establishing teams of experienced curators with specialties in i) Antiquities ii) Digital Interpretation iii) History and Heritage iv) Painting and Calligraphy and v) Visual Culture to join HKPM. Reporting to the Head Curator, each Curator will supervise a team of curatorial staff and take the lead in formulation of interpretation plans for future standing or special exhibitions, as well as assist the Head Curator to draw up relevant curatorial policies and strategic plans on exhibitions in support of the HKPM’s institutional goals.

 

You will be responsible for:

 

·       assisting the Head Curator in formulating museum policies, including but not limited to the policy of exhibition and strategic plans for the HKPM in relation to the scope of exhibitions and curatorial programmes;

·       planning and implementing a dynamic mix of exhibitions, publications and curatorial activities, with an aim to engage diverse audiences for the HKPM, to develop their understanding of Chinese history, art and culture and awareness of its significance as a vital social and cultural force;

·       coordinating with the Palace Museum on matters related to the arrangement of displaying its collection in the HKPM’s standing and special exhibitions, as well as other collaborations on research and curatorial matters;

·       developing relationships and networks with international and regional museums and institutions, as well as stakeholder groups such as collectors, donors, and partners to identify collaborative opportunities;

·       developing and driving pre-opening exhibitions and creating awareness from the local, regional and global attention to the HKPM prior to its opening;

·       planning and overseeing the configuration, organisation and management of the exhibition galleries of the HKPM under his/her purview;

·       taking lead in content development and conducting academic research for preparation of write-ups for museum exhibitions and publications;

·       managing the team by providing coaching and guidance on delivering exhibitions from conception through planning to implementation in a professional manner as well as planning for staff training and career development;

·       seeking professional development opportunities for the team that will introduce new professional contacts and provide new skills and ideas for improved presentation of exhibitions; and

·       preparing and monitoring the annual departmental budget related to exhibitions and curatorial programming at the HKPM.

 

Curator who is specialising in Digital Interpretation, you will be additionally responsible for:

·       developing and driving pre-opening exhibitions by making use of multimedia/digital media technologies for visitor-facing learning elements on-site and online, including audio guides, interactive stations, web and social media contents; and

·       developing and implementing digital strategies for digital exhibitions on-site and online for interpretation of exhibits in collaboration with curatorial, information technology and design staff.

 

You should:

·       possess a recognised university degree in Art History, Fine Arts, Archaeology, Cultural Studies, Museum Studies, Creative Media, or other relevant fields; an advanced degree is preferable;

·       have at least 10 years of experience in curating and museum-related work;

·       have good knowledge of either Chinese antiquities or Chinese painting and calligraphy or Chinese history or heritage or archaeology;

·       possess well-developed networks with museums, collectors, donors and academics, etc.; and

·       be proficient in written and spoken English, preferably with knowledge of Cantonese and Putonghua, or any other second language.

Curator who is specialised in Digital Interpretation, you should:

·       have profound knowledge of multimedia/digital media technologies and proven experience in their application to museum exhibitions.

 

Curator who is specialised in Visual Culture, you should:

·       have good knowledge of Chinese art and culture as well as a wide understanding of contemporary and emerging artistic practices, relevant theories and international discourses in the field of visual cultures.
