The Hong Kong Palace Museum (HKPM) is a dedicated museum that showcases the exquisite artefacts from Palace Museum’s collections and collaborates with other museums in research, exhibition, education and public programmes.  The museum comprises 7,600 square metres of gallery space for standing and special exhibitions on Palace Museum’s collections of paintings, calligraphy, antiquities and historical objects, as well as thematic displays on world cultures and civilisations.  With the construction work in full swing for completion in 2022, the HKPM is seeking a Head Designer who is responsible for building design leadership at the museum and supporting the museum’s vision to become a world-class museum.  Reporting to the Deputy Director, Curatorial and Programming, the Head Designer directs an internal design studio with a total of 20 staff and delivers high quality exhibition, programming and communications products in support of the museum’s goals.  The role leads the development of complex design concepts and solutions to facilitate public engagement and interaction with the collections, and manages the design, fabrication, installation and maintenance of the museum’s standing, special and travelling exhibitions in accordance with best professional museum practices.  The position is required to ensure consistent application of museum branding and coherent design approaches across all programmes and activities through two and three dimensional designs, and digital.

 

You will be responsible for:

 

·       leading the development of visitor experiences and design process for the museum’s standing and special exhibitions.  Envisioning and articulating exhibition content, themes, and goals with creative design solutions for the development of distinctive, engaging, and safe space configuration and build-out options;

·       leading the exhibition production process through construction and installation, including creating drawings, specifications and construction documents, and meet exhibition schedules on time and within budget;

·       ensuring a secure environment for artefacts and artwork, appropriate visitor circulation, accessibility, and safety in consultation with museum curators, educators, conservators and collection managers;

·       overseeing the design and production of multiple museum products including temporary and travelling exhibitions, publications, signage, furniture, and educational and promotional materials;

·       preparing and monitoring cost for projects and direct the procurement of specialty fabrication, printing, imaging, silk screening, and other design-related services from external vendors; and

·       managing the Design team by providing coaching and guidance to staff members and devising plans for staff recruitment, training and career development.

 

You should:

 

·       possess a recognised university degree or above in Design or other relevant disciplines;

·       have at least 12 years of work experience in large-scale exhibition design and other museum related work with extensive experience across a range of design including 3D, 2D and digital;

·       have exceptionally strong design and visualisation skills;

·       possess strong organisational, negotiating, written and interpersonal skills;

·       demonstrates proven ability and experience in leading teams to deliver highly creative and effective museum exhibition designs;

·       have experience in budgeting, personnel management and working collaboratively with museum curators, educators and conservators;

·       be able to work well under pressure to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks / projects concurrently; and

·       have good written and oral communication skills in English, preferably with knowledge of Cantonese and Putonghua, or any other second language.
