Museum Educator- Historic London Town and Gardens

Historic London Town and Gardens is looking for enthusiastic and creative individuals with experience in museum interpretation, classroom education, environmental education, and/or colonial history to facilitate visitor experiences, tours, and special events in our living history museum and gardens as seasonal Museum Educators. Compensation for this position is $12.00 per hour.

 

Position is open until filled.

 

Training for new Museum Educators will begin on September 3, 2019. About Historic London Town & Gardens:

Historic London Town and Gardens is a twenty-three acre park featuring history, archaeology, and horticulture on the South River in Edgewater, Maryland. The park is owned by Anne Arundel County and managed by the London Town Foundation, a non-profit organization, under a formal operating agreement with the county government. The Foundation is responsible for developing and conducting interpretive, recreational, and educational programs that allow visitors to learn about our historical, archaeological, and horticultural offerings.

 

Our mission is to “inspire a deeper understanding of our region’s history, environment, culture, and arts through living history, historical artifacts, experiential public gardens, and collaborative cultural & arts programs.”

 

Chief Objectives of the Position:

Primary duties include creating a welcoming environment that encourages visitors to interact with our gardens and historic area, making emotional and intellectual connections to the stories we tell. During the spring and fall, Museum Educators lead school tours for the over 5,000 children who visit each year. They also work with general visitors on weekends and assist in developing and implementing special programs and activities for visitors of all ages.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Display an inviting and enthusiastic attitude with excellent attention to customer service

  • Work as an active member of the museum team by collaborating with other staff to engage visitors in discussion and hands-on activities

  • Lead interactive tours of and programs in our Historic Area (including one original colonial tavern and two reconstructions) and our 10 acres of wooded and ornamental gardens

  • Conduct demonstrations of various 18th century skills in various weather conditions while wearing 18th century costume and assist in active interpretation and maintenance appropriate to the site

  • Assist with front desk duties and customer service

Education and Experience:

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Enthusiasm for creating interactive experiences for visitors that are relevant to their lives and connect with them emotionally, are thought-provoking,and include multiple perspectives

  • Experience working with the public and speaking to visitors of all ages, including school and adult groups

  • Experience in museum education and/or classroom education

  • Ability to facilitate interactive tours and activities

  • Knowledge or willingness to learn about colonial American history and lifeways

  • Knowledge or willingness to learn about regional plants and animals

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Ability to walk, bend, and/or stand for extended periods of time

 

Work Schedule:

On average, Museum Educators work 10 to 20 hours per week on week days and weekends, mid-March through early June and October through mid-December. From mid-June through September, educators should only expect to work about three weekend days per month and almost no weekdays. We have few tours and weekend coverage needs in January and February. Museum Educators are asked to be available for two weeks for bi-annual training in late February and early March and an additional one to two weeks in September, as well as monthly continuing education opportunities, usually held on Tuesdays.

 

About the London Town Foundation:

Most employees and volunteers who work at Historic London Town and Gardens work for the London Town Foundation. The Foundation is generally considered a small organization in terms of personnel. As such all employees and volunteers should expect to perform tasks and duties that are generally outside of their usual assignments.
