The Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum was established in 1991 in Owensboro, Kentucky, as a 501c3 non-profit repository for the artifacts and collections of bluegrass music.  It has since become a fully operational museum serving a global fan base estimated in the millions.  Currently, the museum houses priceless artifacts, exhibits and memorabilia from the pioneers of bluegrass music, and is an international resource for research of the bluegrass genre.  The organization’s primary fundraiser, a multi-day outdoor music festival, ROMP Festival, has evolved into an award-winning event attended each year by thousands from around the world! 

In addition to exhibits and public concerts, the museum offers a range of educational programs including group music lessons, music camps, and Bluegrass in the Schools (BITS), where thousands of students are exposed to the music, instruments, and history of bluegrass music.  The Bluegrass Hall of Fame & Museum is active in promoting the rich history and promoting the future of bluegrass music.  

 

POSTION SUMMARY:

The Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum is seeking and experienced curator who is professional and knowledgeable with the ability to play an integral role in shaping the overall visitor experience.  The ideal candidate is detail oriented, has the ability to function at a high level within an ever-changing environment, and must have an interest in preserving the historical record of bluegrass music.  The Curator of Collections is responsible for all aspects of artifact collection, procurement, assessment, evaluation, and preservation.

 

ESESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Management & Communication

·      Establish collaborative relationships and meet regularly with Directors to learn about events and programs, to direct dialogue regarding planned exhibits, to consider grant opportunities as they apply to museum exhibit functions, and to stay abreast of all museum activity

·      Provide recruitment, training, and direct supervision of interns and volunteer staff

·      Maintain collections documentation though donor files, accession registrar, computer catalog, research files, insurance, and the museum’s web site

·      Work directly with special groups, researchers, and individuals as a guide to all specialized content in the archives and library

·      Collaborate with outside partners to create and design exhibits from the research phase, contacting potential donors, writing engaging exhibit scripts, and maintenance of current exhibits

·      Take an active role in acquiring fresh and interesting exhibit content to ensure consumer desire to return to museum

·      Work closely with the Executive Director to plan for and coordinate a five-year accreditation process with the American Association of Museums

Accessioning & Deaccessioning Artifacts

·      Inventory & Catalogue all magazines, newsletters, and journals in in database using PastPerfect museum software

·      Accession upon arrival all new music (CD, Vinyl, and cassette)

·      Ensure all documentation, forms, and contracts are complete on any new donation and catalogued accordingly

·      Keep up to date all donor files and deaccession according to contracts on file

Preservation of the Collection

·      Maintenance oversight of vault and vault content

·      Responsible for all quality controls and conservation issues; including temperature and humidity settings for all archive and library areas, collection storage, and security

·      Scanning photographs and documents to ensure digitalization of all materials

·      Cleaning all artifacts to museum standards and inspecting for damaging or potentially destructive mechanisms

·      Having a constant working knowledge of the status of all donations including the location of all items on loan, in temporary custody, and permanent donations

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • BA or MA in Museum Studies, Public History, or Related field
  • Knowledge of best practices for exhibiting artifacts and collections and for digitizing collections
  • Experience with PastPerfect software preferred
  • Ability to think creatively and innovatively
  • Budget-management skills and proficiency
  • Skilled in personnel management and the ability to prioritize and give directions to volunteers and interns
  • Exceptional multitasking skills to manage multiple projects independently and consistently
  • Must be comfortable interfacing with a diverse group of people
  • Extremely organized and detail oriented
  • A team player who is comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
