Historic House Interpreter - part time; Atlanta History Center, Atlanta, GA

The Atlanta History Center is looking for a highly motivated and results oriented professional to fill the role within the organization of Historic House Interpreter. 

This role is responsible for creating engaging and educational experiences for visitors of Smith Family Farm, Swan House, Margaret Mitchell House, and/or Wood Family Cabin. Information is presented in a variety of formats including guided tours, living history presentations, self-guided experiences, and public programs. Presentation techniques may include portraying a living history character, speaking in a 3rd person point of view, and/or demonstrating historic crafts and skills.  In addition, Historic House Interpreters assist with day-to-day operations of the historic houses including administrative tasks, animal/livestock care, continuing education, and collections care and cleaning

Provide excellent customer service and information to create the most satisfactory experience for our visitors.

 

Responsibilities

·         Work collaboratively with Atlanta History Center Staff and key departments to understand the institutional objectives and mission.

·         Establish and maintain good working relationships with colleagues, donors, volunteers, senior managers, and trustees, with an emphasis on tact, diplomacy, flexibility, collaboration, professionalism, and discretion.

·         Develop a thorough knowledge of the Historic Houses including the history, interpretative themes, collections, historic landscape, and preservation of assigned site(s). 

·         Present factual and engaging historic interpretation to a variety of audiences using interpretive techniques such as 1st person, 3rd person, and crafting demonstrations. This work may be performed in period clothing, outdoors, indoors, and in all types of weather conditions.

·         Regularly review material in content manuals and participate in continuing education classes as required.

·         Develop a thorough knowledge of approved tour techniques and new programs. Adapt to evolving interpretative strategies or formats.

·         Develop demonstration skills, which may vary based on Historic House.

·         Assist in the daily operations of the Historic Houses including clerical duties and minor collections care and cleaning of the historic houses as trained and assigned.  

·         Assist in the implementation of living history related adult and family programs and activities

·         Assist in the development of new interpretative content, strategies, programs, or tactile demonstrations.

·         Assist other departments and work special and private events as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in History, Education, or Theatre preferred.
  • Ability to perform tasks that require moderate physical exertion as required (lifting, climbing, bending, pulling, standing for long periods).
  • Effective verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must have working phone, internet/email access, and reliable transportation.
  • Customer service and public speaking skills required.

Background Check Requirements

·         Satisfactory criminal background check required.
