Assistant Curator Opportunity with The Met Museum



The Assistant Curator in the Leonard A. Lauder Research Center for Modern Art should be a specialist of modernism, with a concentration on the history of Cubism. As part of the curatorial team in the Leonard A. Lauder Research Center for Modern Art at the Metropolitan Museum, s/he will be responsible for contributing to all curatorial duties, including: researching, studying, interpreting, and publishing works in the collection under her/his curatorial responsibility; contributing to exhibitions and publications; assisting in the management on ongoing research projects and programs; and building and maintaining the reputation of the Research Center with museum colleagues and outside scholars and curators, as well as collectors and patrons.


· Participate in all Research Center activities, including working with Fellows, assisting visiting scholars and researchers; participating and supporting various workshops, programs, and long-term research projects; and other related responsibilities;

· Assist in leading scholarship on and interpretation of objects under her/his curatorial responsibility;

· Propose and contribute to Museum publications, including catalogue essays and entries, as well as other printed and online texts;

· Assist in proposing, planning and executing exhibitions in cooperation with colleagues in the department and across the museum;

· Answer correspondence relating to the Collection; assist the public and visiting scholars;

· Foster and maintain excellent working relationships with donors, patrons, collectors, dealers, colleagues from other international institutions, and the scholarly community;

· Assist in overseeing care and conservation of Leonard A. Lauder collection;

· Participate in curatorial activities within the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art, including collection assessment and acquisition initiatives;

· Assist with departmental fundraising as appropriate;

· Assist with programs for departmental friends groups, The Modern Circle and Visiting Committee;

· Contribute to the Museum's public and educational programs (Learning, Volunteers, Digital Media, etc.)

· Other duties as assigned.


Experience and Skills:

· Minimum three years of experience in a museum, academic institution or equivalent;

· Demonstrated scholarly achievement, including evidence of original research and writing ability, as well as broad international engagement and learning

· Excellent interpersonal and communications skills with colleagues across the museum and externally with artists, academics, scholars, donors, and the general public

· Ability to create and maintain precise records

Knowledge and Education:

· PhD (or equivalent) in history of art - preferred;

· Expertise in the field of Modern western art

· Excellent communication skills, including scholarly writing;

· Languages

· Facility with Office and TMS
