Job Purpose:

Working as part of the web team, you will provide editorial services across all of The National Archives’ web and digital channels. You will be writing original web content, as well as checking material produced by others and planning future content for the website and social channels, making sure that our editorial standards are applied consistently.

You’ll enjoy taking the initiative, juggling a varied workload and working collaboratively in teams. We’ll expect a strong commitment to editorial excellence, of course, and will be looking for someone with a genuine passion for writing and communications.

The web team at The National Archives is committed to delivering high quality, innovative and trusted web services to diverse audiences. You will be part of a creative, motivated team who embrace challenge and look for opportunities to do things differently. Our plans this year include the ongoing transformation of our site into a fully responsive website to enhance the user experience for our growing mobile audience.

Reports to: Online Managing Editor

Role and Responsibilities:

As an Online Editor within The National Archives’ web team you will work across a variety of projects and manage day-to-day updates of our website. You will work with internal stakeholders to re-structure and re-write content and liaise with digital content owners across the company.

Working within the web team you will:

* Produce user-focused and engaging editorial copy for The National Archives' website, blog and other digital channels

* Ensure content demonstrates best practice in web writing, is factually correct and is consistent with house style. You will need to make firm editorial decisions on suitability for publication

* Write, edit and proofread editorial content, both directly in HTML pages and using our content management systems

* Coach and train web content providers in best practice in writing for the web and using a content management system, and work with them to develop content for use by a wide range of external audiences

* Organise and deliver editorial projects to tight deadlines, as well as having the flexibility to approach certain projects in a more agile way

* Work with the Online Managing Editor in leading a network of editors within the organisation

* Ensure all editorial content on the website is well optimised for natural search

* Regularly audit and monitor content on the website to ensure it is aligned with the editorial policy and online principles

* Update the homepage and key landing pages of the website with relevant, topical and accurate information

* Make an active contribution to the web team and demonstrate flexibility to learn new skills and help your colleagues
