About the Sitka Historical Society & Museum

The Sitka Historical Society is a 57 year old organization which operates the Sitka Historical Museum.  The Society’s mission is to preserve and promote the events, stories and artifacts of the human history of the Sitka area for the inspiration, education and benefit of the public and future generations.  The Sitka Historical Society has amassed one of the most diverse and largest collections in Sitka comprised of over 8,000 three-dimensional artifacts, several hundred paintings, prints and examples of fine art, a spectacular collection of nearly 25,000 historic photographs, and more than 100,000 archival documents, all ranging from the 1740s until the present day.

 

Job Functions

This fellowship will offer hand-on, practical experience working with permanent museum collections and registration.  During the summer of 2015, the SHS Museum will begin a year-long project to relocate, inventory, and digitally catalog its objects and archives in preparation for the opening of its new museum in 2017.  Working alongside the curator and museum staff, the fellow will focus on collections management.  This will include:

·         Assisting with the packing and physical movement of the collections

·         Conducting a systematic inventory of the collections

·         Creating catalog entries in the collections database (PastPerfect)

·         Researching collections and acquisition records

·         Photographing and documenting artifacts

·         Labeling and housing/rehousing objects for long-term storage

·         Performing additional duties consistent with the employee’s background and training

 

Qualifications

·         Recent graduate of a BA or MA program in museum studies, American history, anthropology, or related field 

·         Experience handling museum objects, artifacts, and/or archival material required 

·         Preference given to those candidates with museum collections software experience 

·         A knowledge of and interest in American history

·         Standard office computer skills, including database software and word processing

·         Experience with digital camera equipment and scanners

·         Ability to work independently on detailed tasks

·         Must be able to lift 50 pounds and work in tight spaces

 

Schedule

The fellowship begins in July and lasts for nine months.  The start date is negotiable, but needs to occur no later than July 15, 2015.  The museum collections fellow will work 37.5 hours per week (8hr days with a 30 minute lunch break).  Flexibility may be required to coincide work days with the curator’s schedule.  This may mean a Monday-Friday or a Tuesday-Saturday schedule.    

 

Compensation

The fellow will be provided a $600.00 monthly stipend, plus housing at the historic U.S. Forest Service’s Geodetic Survey House.  A $500.00 travel defrayal stipend will be paid to the fellow upon arrival in Sitka.  The fellow will be granted seven vacation days, in addition to receiving the same holidays as museum staff.  This may include: Labor Day, Alaska Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day, President’s Day, and Seward’s Day (The fellow may ask to have some of those holidays moved to accommodate his/her religious beliefs).  Most importantly, the fellow will receive a significant experiential work opportunity in the field of museum collections management while enjoying some of the best scenery Alaska has to offer.
