Museum Executive Director (open position announcement)


Westminster College and the National Churchill Museum invite applications and nominations for candidates to serve as the Executive Museum Director for the College’s National Churchill Museum (NCM). The NCM was dedicated in 1969 and serves as a memorial to the life and inspirational leadership of Sir Winston Churchill, who on March 5, 1946 gave the historical “Iron Curtain” speech at Westminster College.  The NCM consists of a world-class museum and the Sir Christopher Wren-designed St. Mary Aldermanbury Church. The NCM has been designated by an act of Congress as the nation’s official Churchill museum. It is housed on the beautiful Westminster College campus, which is one of America’s top liberal arts colleges, founded in 1851 and home to 1000 students.


This position reports to the President of the College and serves as the leader of the NCM and is responsible for supervising all aspects of the Museum’s operation, to include: leadership, mission, vision, strategic planning, management, finance and budgeting, fundraising, facilities maintenance, retail operations, special activities, and programs, including the College’s Museum Studies Program.  The Executive Museum Director also serves on the Westminster College cabinet and provides appropriate advice, representation, and support to the President and to several committees and subcommittees of Westminster College and its Board of Trustees. As the Sandra L. and Monroe E. Trout Endowed Professor of Churchill Studies, the Executive Museum Director will teach courses in British History and other related courses and perform other associated faculty duties. 


The position requires a Master’s degree or equivalent in Modern British History or a closely related field and two years of experience as an Instructor or related position in Modern British History or closely related field.  In addition, the position requires 5 years of progressively responsible experience in leadership and management, strategic planning, budgeting, fundraising, and marketing of not-for-profit museums and/or historical sites or related institutions.
